For everyone heading off to college or university this September, we've put together a list of the things you might need to survive the year.

The most important thing to remember is you'll have limited space so focus on the essentials. Plus the less stuff you take the easier it'll be to move! You don't need to splash out on expensive stuff either - you'll find everything you need in places like IKEA, Argos and big supermarkets.

You might not need any cooking equipment if you're living in fully catered halls of residence, but it's still worth checking what's provided and if you need to buy anything else. Self-catering might be a challenge but there's a certain satisfaction you'll get from rustling something up from scratch. If you're a beans-on-toast sort of person, buy the minimum - you won't need a spiralizer.

Some of things you might need:

  • Plates and bowls (make sure they're microwavable!)

  • Cutlery

  • Glasses and mugs

  • Chopping knives and board

  • Frying pan

  • Saucepans (remember to bring a few different sizes)

  • Flat baking tray (for oven chips)

  • Tupperware

  • Bottle opener

  • Tin opener

  • Cheese grater

  • Pizza cutter (though it's much easier to use scissors - trust us, it'll change your life)

  • Tea towels

Argos have an essential pack which includes everything you might need.

And don't forget about washing up liquid!

This should look and feel like your private space - make it as personal and comfy as possible. Whether it's a quiet night in or struggling through a hangover, you'll need plenty of sleep. Find out what your university will provide you with. Do you need to bring your own duvet or pillows? IKEA have a big range of every type of bedding you could imagine. ASDA also have a nice selection, including this colourful unicorn cover.

Some bedroom essentials:

  • Duvet

  • Pillows

  • Fitted sheet x2

  • Duvet and pillow covers x2

  • Blankets

  • Extra hangers

  • Ear plugs

  • Reading lamp

  • Alarm clock

Everyone's needs are different, so you'll know yourself what you need. All we'll say is that it's important to keep clean and look after yourself - nobody wants to earn a reputation as the smelly flatmate. Tesco have a range of essentials at good prices.

Some useful stuff to take:

  • Bath towels

  • Hand towels

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Shower gel, shampoo, soap, etc.

  • Shaving cream, razors, etc.

  • A dressing gown

  • Deodorant

  • Painkillers

  • Cold and flu medicine (to fight off the dreaded Freshers' Flu)

Stationary can be particularly expensive so we recommend supermarkets and pound stores instead of expensive stationary stores. ALDI and Amazon have some good deals on stuff you'll need for lectures and tutorials, including some nice highlighters (the stress of highlighting an entire textbook is softened by the happy colours).

A selection of what you might need:

  • Pens and pencils

  • Highlighters

  • A4 writing pad

  • Folders with dividers

  • Course books

  • USB pens

Some exciting and not-so-exciting items you should pack:

  • Umbrella (this is Scotland, after all)

  • Clothes horse

  • Extension cable

  • A pack of cards (to make friends with your new flatmates over a drinking game or two)
